Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane on Tuessday reassured the public that student leader Mcebo Dlamini is in good health at Johannesburg Central Prison.
Speaking in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature‚ Nkosi-Malobane said she received information that Dlamini was on a hunger strike in prison. The MEC said she visited him and could assure that public that he is eating and being well taken care of behind bars.
“He is not on hunger strike. He is in a high-care facility where people like gays and police are placed because of possible attacks they can receive from other inmates...” said Nkosi-Malobane.
Dlamini‚ a former SRC president at the University of the Witwatersrand and leader of the #FeesMustFall movement‚ was arrested this month at student residence by police on five charges‚ including public violence and assault.
He was denied bail when he appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court.
