R2 million abalone bust and the man who tried to get away

Two people aged 31 and 36 will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after being caught with R2 million worth of abalone packed in two vehicles.

They were pulled over along Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road in the Western Cape on Monday during a sting operation by members from the Department of Agriculture‚ Forestry and Fisheries in Somerset West.

One of the vehicles collided with authorities while attempting to speed away.

“The official who sustained minor injuries instinctively reacted and fired at the speeding bakkie bringing it to a sudden stop about 500 metres away‚ the suspect then got out and fled the scene‚ leaving a trail of blood‚” said Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha on Tuesday.

“A search of both vehicles uncovered about 11941 units of wet abalone valued at just under R2-million‚” he said.

“Authorities immediately launched a manhunt which led to the... arrest of the second suspect who is due to face an additional charge of attempted murder. He was apprehended in Bredasdorp Hospital where he had gone to seek medical attention for a... gunshot wound.”
