Wits student leader Mcebo Dlamini arrested‚ on charge of cop assault

Former president of the University of the Witwatersrand's student representative council Mcebo Dlamini was arrested on Saturday night in a police raid on his residence room.

According to community newspaper Wits Vuvuzela‚ Dlamini was "arrested for apparently assaulting a police officer".

Economic Freedom Fighters national chairperson Advocate Dali Mpofu has consulted with Dlamini at the Cleveland Police Station where he is being held.

After spending an hour with Dlamini‚ Mpofu tweeted "he's OK" around 3am.

Not long after Dlamini's arrest‚ students gathered to march to Hillbrow Police Station where they believed he had been taken‚ Wits Vuvuzela said.

Students are expected to mobilise on Sunday morning and march to the police station where he is in custody.

Wits University said it is aware that a student leader was arrested in the early hours of this morning at the Wits Junction Residence Complex.

"We do not know what the student has been charged with or when the student will appear in court. All queries should be directed to the SA Police Services‚" spokesperson Shirona Patel said..

Dlamini last year made headlines when he took to Facebook to declare his admiration for Nazi Germany's Adolf Hitler.

Following this‚ he was removed from his position as SRC president.
