Over 1‚000 students are expected to march through the streets of Durban on Tuesday to call for free “decolonised” education.

Thobani Zikalala‚ a student activist leading the FeesMustFall campaign in KwaZulu-Natal‚ said they had been working towards a national shutdown to ensure no campus is operational on Tuesday.

Zikalala said on Monday afternoon that students were expected from a number of educational institutions to march from Curries Fountain to the Durban City Hall where they plan on handing over a memorandum to leaders.

“Students must be marching for their future. We have invited the premier‚ the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and the head of the Durban Chamber of Commerce who must play a active role in giving the money that is needed for us to be able to have free education in South Africa.

“We want to give a narrative from our side on what fees must fall means and why our campuses are the way they are today. Our campuses have been turned into police war zones because we are calling for free education. We are being victimised by the system. The public have not been well informed on why the fees must fall‚” said Zikalala.

He said key to their memorandum will be the call for the release of all their comrades who are in jail‚ the decriminalisation of all the students and making sure that all their campuses are demilitarised so that they can open up a space for conversation.

“Our biggest demand is free decolonised education in South Africa. The only conversation we are interested in is when and how are we going to roll out free education in South Africa.”
