CPUT management meets to map way forward after violent clashes

Cape Peninsula University of Technology management is currently in a meeting to map the way forward after students forced a shutdown of both its Cape Town and the Bellville campuses.

Classes were due to commence today after the school had resolved last week to suspend academic activity.

But all hell broke loose when students clashed with both police and campus security.

Cape Town‚ students stoned police and security and later set alight a private security vehicle.

Police and security responded by at firing at students with plastic pellets‚ rubber bullets and stun grenades.

“We are monitoring the situation after violent clashes between protesters ‚ SAPS and private security at our Cape

Town and Bellville campuses earlier today‚” said CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley on Tuesday.

She said the institution was aware of a minibus van that was set alight at the Cape Town campus but she is yet to hear what exactly transpired.

 Police are currently monitoring a small group of students who are singing outside the City Edge residence‚ a few metres away for the Cape Town Campus.
