Johannesburg joins Tshwane in throttling water supply

The City of Johannesburg on Monday joined Tshwane in reducing water supply in response to residents’ failure to cut down on their consumption.

In a service alert‚ the city advised: “Roodepoort and surrounding areas‚ due to high consumption‚ we are throttling the system in the area to save water“.

Earlier on Monday‚ the Tshwane announced a range of measures including: throttling the water supply system by partially closing main water outlet valves at reservoirs so that flow is restricted and reservoirs can maintain good levels; throttling the main water network pipes to restrict flow; implementing scheduled water shedding; and installing flow restrictors to high water consumers/users.

In August‚ the Water department issued a government gazette compelling municipalities to reduce consumption by 15%. However‚ the response from consumers has not been satisfactory.
