At least 15 treated after fire in building in Joburg CBD

At least 15 people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a building on the corner of Nugget and Commissioner Streets in the Johannesburg CBD in the early hours of Sunday‚ ER24 emergency medical service said.

“Shortly after midnight paramedics from ER24 and City of Johannesburg Fire Fighters arrived on the scene where they found they found one of the building’s floors well alight. Several people were still busy evacuating the building and bystanders indicated that some people went up to the roof of the building when the fire broke out‚” said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak.

“While fire fighters were fighting the blaze‚ ER24’s team prepared a triage station to treat injured occupants of the building. Several people were treated for minor smoke inhalation on scene. At least 15 people were seen by the medical personnel at the triage station and assessed for smoke inhalation and minor scrapes and bruises.”

Vermaak said two people had been transported to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and Hillbrow Clinic respectively. One person sustained a serious cut to his head and the other sustained a possible fracture to his ankle.

“Fire fighters assisted the occupants of the building with the evacuation. ER24’s medical team provided medical standby on scene while fire fighters were continuing to fight the blaze.

“The exact cause for the fire is not yet known‚” Vermaak added.
