The Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command plans to shut down campuses of universities and colleges across the country on Monday‚ until free quality higher education is realised.

This according to EFF SC president Mpho Morolane who addressed the media at a Johannesburg briefing on Wednesday.

Morolane sent a clear message to universities planning to open in coming days — “we are coming for you“.

The country has entered week three of national protests over free education after minister of higher education and training Blade Nzimande announced that universities could hike 2017 fees‚ capped at 8%.

Morolane said Nzimande and the government did not take the demands of the students seriously and that action needed to be taken.

“There isn’t a university or college that is going to open here before the minister and the government of the day comes with the introduction of free quality education as a matter of urgency.

“They must be prepared that the struggle is going to escalate and we are calling on all members of society [to join the movement].”

Morolane said that the EFF SC is engaging society at all levels from the church to labour‚ in a bid to grow the call for free education.

“On Sunday we will be engaging 20 churches in Tshwane alone. Here in Johannesburg we are engaging about 10 churches.

“On the 10th [of this month] there isn’t an institution that is going to operate.

“In the University of Limpopo‚ you must forget. There isn’t going to any operations. The University of Venda‚ we are not going to have operations. VUT who is victimising our fighters‚ you must know also that we are coming for you. You are not going to operate.”

To institutions in Tshwane Morolane said‚ “we are going to bring the capital to a standstill.”

He also warned businesses in Tshwane and throughout the country that they may be affected.

“We are going to occupy strategic sectors in the country‚” he said. This includes the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Morolane told police officers that it was time for them to join the fight too.

“We know that you are not earning a decent salary and we are requesting you‚ like the police in Thailand has done where there were protests‚ show solidarity with the protesters.”

He added that the EFF SC is not afraid of police brutality.

Various meetings with members of the South African Council of Churches are expected to take place on Sunday evening.
