Gauteng Premier David Makhura has announced that his official residence will be sold.

He hasn’t been staying the Bryanston mansion for two years already‚ despite millions of rands being spent on it during the time of his predecessor‚ now Water Affairs and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokanyane.

Makhura‚ speaking in the legislature on Tuesday‚ announced that the executive committee has given the Gauteng infrastructure department a mandate to sell all houses owned by Gauteng Province‚ including the official residence.

“We are confident that the decision will save us a lot of money and help raise additional resources‚” the GautengGov ?@GautengProvince said on Twitter.

The money raised would be used to fund the Township Economic Revitalisation programme and bursaries‚ the provincial government said.

The Bryanston official residence‚ which Makhura previously designated to be used to host “official business government engagements” when he chose to remain in his own home‚ was Mokonyane’s official residence when she was premier.

The property was purchased in 2004 for R11.4 million‚ but further renovations costing an additional R4 million were subsequently made due to what government called “structural defects” to areas such as the swimming pool.
