The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) student representative council (SRC) and management met on Monday morning ahead of a national fee adjustment announcement.
Before stepping into the meeting‚ UKZN spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said management did not expect any protests as all campuses were closed to students until Tuesday.
However‚ on Friday the university announced that it would deploy additional security personnel across all campuses from Monday
In a vice-chancellor’s communique‚ Dr Albert van Jaarsveld advised staff and students that there would be strict access control on all campuses.
“UKZN identification will be required for all staff and students seeking access to any of the campuses.
“All staff and students should carry UKZN identification cards visibly on their person at all times.”
Van Jaarsveld urged the university community to remain vigilant regarding their personal safety and security at all times.
“Anyone who notices anything that may raise security concerns‚ is urged to report this to Risk Management Services on their respective campus.”
The university had been rocked by two weeks of violent disruptions and marches at its Westville‚ Pietermaritzburg and Howard College campuses at the beginning of the month.
The on-going violence resulted in the academic programme being suspended until Tuesday.
