Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi will on Friday head to Khutsong‚ on the West Rand‚ in a bid to ensure gang violence won’t affect the upcoming matric exams.

Lesufi told PowerFM that it is “an open secret that the area is infested with gangsters…of school-going age”.

In July‚ three gang members were stabbed – one of them‚ 19-year-old Sabelo Phalindlela‚ died of his injuries – when violence broke out between the “Creatures” and the “Garenjas” in Extension 3. They were pupils at the at Badirile and Tswasungu high schools.

Panyaza told PowerFM that he was hopeful the culprits would be brought to book as he had leaned on law enforcement agencies to act.

“I really pressured the police and I’m grateful that they have accepted the pressure for them to intervene and intervene decisively.

“I’m heading there this morning to receive a brief report (from the police) and to make sure that‚ when we start matric examinations‚ we don’t have this kind of situation happening on our school premises‚” the MEC added.

“We first need to apprehend the suspects‚ but‚ at the same time‚ have a protection plan to protect the legitimacy and the credibility of our examinations.”

A suspect has been arrested and the Khutsong SAPS is still investigating the reasons behind the flare-up of violence.
