Parliament probes metro police chiefs on bribes and prostitutes

Police bribes remain a key issue for the South African Police Service (SAPS) and metro police officials‚ the parliamentary committee on police heard on Wednesday.

The committee was being briefed by metro police chiefs on their mandate‚ training and relationship with SAPS‚ as well as the conduct of members within the various units.

Freedom Front Plus’ Pieter Groenewald highlighted his concerns regarding the “personality” of metro police members as they “often accept bribes”‚ and questioned whether psychometric tests are done on the members.

“Do we have psychometric tests because not everyone has the personality to be a police officer as we can see in the way they address the residents?” he asked the various metro police bosses.

“We have seen on numerous occasions on social media‚ YouTube and such‚ that people are pulled off‚ and they just don’t receive any answers as to why.

“These sorts of issues arise concerns as to why we actually need metro police.”

National Freedom Party MP Ahmed Shaik Emam emphasised the issue of sex workers falling victim to bribes.

“There is clear arrogance among many metro police officials; if you are not going to give them a bribe‚ you are in big trouble‚” Emam said. “Sex workers especially fall victims to bribes.”

In response‚ eThekwini chief of police Eugene Nzama said psychometric tests are done once for each officer. “We do the tests once‚ but sometimes people are employed for 20 years.”

Nzama said that‚ “in relation to sex workers and taking bribes from sex workers‚ we have very serious problems”.

“Community members‚ where sex workers operate‚ really don’t like it‚” he explained.

“So police are sent to those areas because the community complains. In turn‚ sex workers are hesitant to complain about bribes because of the nature of their work.”
