The Democratic Alliance in Mpumalanga has requested that the provincial government suspend eMalahleni municipality’s city manager following his approval of a R1.5-million car for the town’s mayor.

The DA’s whip in the Mpumalanga provincial legislature‚ Bosman Grobler‚ submitted to the house on Tuesday that municipal manager Theo van Vuuren be suspended for using savings from the previous year to pay for the new mayor’s expensive car.

“As such‚ I move that this house call on the MEC of CoGTA to intervene in the eMalahleni Municipality and put the disgraced Municipal Manager Theo Van Vuuren on suspension immediately pending the investigation into his corrupt dealings in the municipality‚” Grobler said.

The Sowetan reported on Tuesday that eMalahleni local municipality decided to use a R1.5-million rollover budget from developmental projects to buy a new luxury for its mayor Lindiwe Ntshalintshali.

In a meeting held on Thursday last week‚ the council approved the purchase of a new car for her.

A report from her office‚ which Sowetan said it had seen‚ states that a vehicle suitable for Ntshalintshali has a “typical price range benchmark between R1-million and R2-million”.

Van Vuuren said the council approved the replacement of the official vehicle [a Lexus] of the mayor in terms of the supply chain processes.

Grobler argued in the legislature that it was through a recommendation by Van Vuuren‚ that the vehicle would be financed from savings realised from the roll over budget.

“In these tough economic times‚ where jobs are being lost‚ service delivery is at an all-time low and eMalahleni Municipality currently experiencing a water crisis‚ this is unacceptable‚” said Grobler.
