Medical doctors urged to work hand in hand with traditional leaders

Medical doctors have been encouraged to work hand in hand with traditional healers in order to make sure that people get complete healthcare and treatment.

A traditional healer‚ Mareetsane Pitso who has been practicing for 38 years said‚ as much as traditional healers refer patients to hospitals and clinics‚ medical doctors and health practitioners also have to refer patients whom they cannot help to traditional healers.

Pitso was addressing hundreds of traditional healers who came to celebrate African traditional medicine day in Mahikeng on Tuesday.

“God gave us a unique gift to use earthly medicine and herbs to heal people‚ we also need medical doctors to work with us‚ they must refer patients to us if they cannot treat them‚” he said.

Pitso said illnesses like epilepsy and mental illness were something that the medical doctors were not able to “cure on the go”. “We are gifted to treat and cure these kind of illnesses at once‚” he said.

He said people had a tendency to disrespect traditional healers‚ but that God had also given them the wisdom to help society through African medicine and herbs.

“Everything that the traditional doctors are using are from God. No one has a wisdom to use African medicine according to his own knowledge‚” he said.
