Zuma not asked to chair body - report

The presidential review committee on state-owned entities that made recommendations on the sector to the Cabinet in 2013, did not recommend that the president should oversee state-owned companies through a co-ordinating body that he would chair.

Last week, the Cabinet announced a decision to form a Presidential State-Owned Enterprise Co-ordinating Council to provide President Jacob Zuma with "a line of sight on strategic decisions and interventions to create state-owned companies that will play a transformative role in a capable developmental state".

Following a public outcry when the move was widely perceived as a power grab, Zuma’s office on Thursday issued a statement saying, "there is nothing sinister or new" about the suggestion as it was the commission’s recommendation.

But while the commission report did recommend that a Council of Ministers be formed, it says it should include the ministers of public enterprises, the Treasury, trade and industry, economic development and the national planning ministry, but does not mention the president.
