Voting in Joburg council continues after sudden death of councillor

The City of Johannesburg council has agreed to hold the elections for the positions of executive mayor and chief whip of council simultaneously.

The ANC had requested that the council allow for two ballot papers to be done simultaneously in order to allow its members to deal with the shock death of one of its councillors.

The ANC councillor‚ whose identity cannot be revealed yet as her next-of-kin need to be informed‚ collapsed during Monday’s proceedings and died.

ANC councillor Geoffrey Makhubo requested council to allow for the voting for the position of the mayor and chief whip of council at the same time.

"We would like to vote in her honour...‚" asked Makhubo.

The practice is that the mayor and chief whip positions are voted separately.

All parties agreed for the voting for the two positions to be held simultaneously.
