Police lauded for swift arrests following Melmoth slayings

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison‚ Mxolisi Kaunda‚ has lauded the police for the swift arrest of four suspects in connection with the brutal murder of three people in Melmoth this week.

The victims‚ a 49-year-old mother‚ her 23-year-old son and 27-year-old daughter‚ who was apparently eight months pregnant‚ were attacked by four suspects armed with bush knives and a firearm who entered their home while they were sleeping.

They were brutally hacked with the bush knives and shot dead.

One of the family members — a 30-year-old woman — survived the attack and was taken to hospital where she is reported to be in a critical condition.

The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage.

Following the murders in the Zululiyaduma area in Melmoth‚ detectives from Melmoth and Glencoe K9 Unit had worked around the clock to ensure that the suspects were swiftly brought to book‚ Kaunda said.

Their efforts yielded results when four suspects were arrested while at their homesteads in the Zululiyaduma area‚ he added.

They will appear in the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Kaunda said more arrests were expected as the investigations continued.

“We are shocked at this act of naked barbarism‚ which among others claimed the lives of defenceless women. The swift arrest of suspects will‚ no doubt‚ send a loud and clear message to killers that the long arm of law is always ready to ensure that those who kill and maim people in KwaZulu-Natal face the full might of the law. To the police we say good work and keep it up‚” said Kaunda.
