Fees Commission chairman Judge Jonathan Heher officially opened the public hearing phase of the commission on Wednesday and said he was looking for any relevant evidence on whether fees were necessary or whether they could be funded.

The commission was established to inquire into‚ report on and make recommendations on the feasibility of a fee-free higher education and training in South Africa.

“The fact that you may have a view which you think is not mainstream or not‚ they will all be given consideration‚” Heher said.

The South African Union of Students – a federation of student representative councils of all universities in the country — was the first organisation to present its views to the commission‚ which was appointed by President Jacob Zuma earlier this year.

The appointment follows widespread protests at the institutions of higher learning last year. The #FeesMustFall protest movement began in October last year in response to an increase in fees at universities. — TMG Digital
