The ANC in the greater Johannesburg region has postponed until further notice a media conference that was scheduled to have been held on Sunday afternoon to give the party’s views on the results of the municipal elections and a coalition government.

The party said the postponement was due to a planned special urgent Provincial Executive Committee meeting “wherein the Gauteng Province will collectively reflect on the elections and chart a way forward”.

While the ANC managed to win the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni metros in the local government elections‚ but with less than 50% of the vote‚ it was defeated by the Democratic Alliance in the capital Tshwane.

The ANC in Gauteng said on Saturday night that it would need to reflect on its performance in the province.

“We remain humbled by the support that we received in these elections and we do not take the support for granted.

“Whilst the ANC received significant support‚ we however note and remain concerned that we did not receive more than 50% in some of the municipalities‚” it stated.

“As the ANC in Gauteng‚ we have taken a decision to introspect and reflect on the issues that many of our voters continue to raise with us. We will not shy away from some weaknesses that have been identified‚ but will engage communities throughout the province to find speedy and meaningful solutions.

“In order to ensure that we continue to implement our programme of radical socio-economic transformation‚ we have started a process of negotiating with other political parties in order to form governments where we do not have a majority‚” the ANC’s leadership in the province added.
