SABC protest ban just one of many 'draconian' practices‚ says fired journalist

The SABC’s protest footage ban is just one of a slew of policies and “draconian anti-journalistic practices” at the public broadcaster‚ one of the fired journalists said on Thursday.

“You can withdraw the protest policy but you still have an environment that is not conducive to the practice of ethical journalism in the SABC‚” Thandeka Gqubule said.

“It’s a bit of a tryst with the devil in a way. We don’t see how this striking down of the policy alone can solve the problems of the corrosive environment and the other forms of censorship that continue to prevail.”

Gqubule and Busisiwe Ntuli were at the Labour Court in Johannesburg supporting four of their colleagues who were challenging their axing from the public broadcaster. — TMG Digital/BDlive
