‘My mother is the greatest person I know’ – Thuli’s son

“Good people do wrong things‚” says Thuli Madonsela in an interview with investigative journalist Mandy Wiener in Marie Claire magazine’s August issue.

The story – headlined “The People’s Protector” – sees Madonsela relating the experiences of her seven-year tenure as Public Protector and what she plans to do which it comes to an end in October .

“She reveals that a 15-month sabbatical is on the cards and for the first time speaks about exploring a completely new direction in textiles‚” a statement from the magazine says.

Marie Claire editor Jackie May explains why Madonsela was chosen for the Women’s Month August issue: “We owe Madonsela a huge vote of thanks: for the work she has done‚ and for the inspirational role model that she is.”

That she is an inspiration is evidenced in this excerpt from the interview that shows her ability to forgive when “good people do wrong things”‚ like she did with her son Mbusowabantu “Wantu” Fidel:

“She even managed to remain cool when Wantu crashed her official state-issued BMW X6 in 2013‚ although she has admitted she ‘freaked’ when she found out her son and car were missing at 4.30am.

“Three years on and Wantu is wise‚ mature and full of respect and praise for his mother’s success.

“ ‘I look at the leaders who fought and died for the liberties I now freely enjoy and as much as I appreciate and admire their courage‚ I feel they fall short of my mother‚’ he says. ‘I may have some bias but I have never read of a person with her blend of integrity and bravery. She has weathered biblical storms with grace‚ because she’s always known that the greatest defence is truth.

“ ‘My mother is the greatest person I know.’ ”
