The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) on Tuesday said it “is dismayed by myths that muti made with the body parts of people with albinism can make the user wealthy”.
Secretary-general Meokgo Matuba called for the country to “collectively stand up against those who are peddling this myth as it results in… barbaric‚ cruel muti killings”.
The league made the statement to “applaud the traditional healer in Manguzi in Kwazulu-Natal who blew the whistle after he was allegedly approached by a woman who wanted to sell him a child…with albinism”.
Media reports earlier this month said the healer‚ James Mthembu‚ had tipped off police after the woman offered him the child‚ who had been missing since June 28‚ for R100 000. She was arrested by Empangeni police.
The ANCWL’s Matuba said the “Bill of Rights in the Constitution of South Africa…enshrines the rights of all people in our country and affirms the democratic values of human dignity‚ equality and freedom”.
“These rights are for all people‚ including people with albinism‚” she noted.
“Our government must work with traditional leaders and the community at large to put an end to this cruel‚ barbaric practice. Anyone who is involved in this barbaric cruel acts must face full wrath of law.” – TMG Digital
