The Patel siblings — arrested in anti-terror raids — made a brief appearance in the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The court was surrounded by a tight security cordon manned by heavily armed police.

Ibrahim and Fatima Patel‚ from Azaadville‚ were arrested in raids by the Hawks earlier this month. They are facing charges relating to the illegal possession of ammunition and explosives.

Their case was postponed to September 20 for further police investigations.

The siblings must report to the police station on a Monday and Friday between 8am and 8pm.

They were released on bail of R5‚000 each at a previous court appearance.

Earlier on Monday‚ police screened people trying to get a place in the courtroom ahead of the start of the morning’s proceedings with sniffer dogs having searched for any explosive devices.

The Patels were arrested hours after police arrested identical twins‚ Brandon-Lee and Tony-Lee Thulsie. The Thulsie brothers‚ who police alleged tried to join the Islamic State‚ are facing three charges relating to terrorism activities.

The Patels and Thulsies were arrested after a year-long investigation by the Hawks’ Crimes Against the State unit.
