The six-year jail sentence given to convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius is a vote of confidence in the justice system‚ and credit for that should go to Gerrie Nel.

It also shows that having money doesn’t make one above the law.

That’s the South African National Civic Organisation’s (Sanco) take on the punishment meted out to the Paralympian in the North Gauteng High Court on Wednesday.

It spokesperson‚ Jabu Mahlangu‚ said it “reaffirmed that South African courts can be trusted to dispense justice for victims of gender-based violence”.

“Justice was finally delivered for Reeva Steenkamp’s family to find closure after a protracted legal process that was strenuous for her family‚” he said.

“The sentence will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators and give hope to victims of violent crime.”

He said Sanco “commends advocate Gerrie Nel and the prosecution team for relentlessly pursuing the cause of justice”.

“Their victory confirms that the super-rich and famous are subject to the same laws as ordinary citizens.” — TMG Digital
