Oscar Pistorius must sit in jail at least 3 more years

Oscar Pistorius‚ the once golden athlete who carried the flag for South Africa at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony‚ must now serve at least three more years in a jail cell as he pays for the night he pumped Black Talon bullets into his model girlfriend.

Judge Thokozile Masipa in the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday sentenced the Olympic and Paralympic athlete to six years in jail for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp on February 14 2013.

According to the Criminal Procedure Act‚ he must serve 50% of his murder sentence before he can be considered for possible placement on parole.

He was released into correctional supervision last year after spending close to one year in prison for his previous sentence of five years for culpable homicide‚ which was changed to murder on appeal.

Seven months ago‚ the appeal court said he should have foreseen that someone would die when he fired four bullets into a tiny toilet cubicle‚ regardless of whether he thought it was an intruder or Steenkamp. Trial court evidence on the bullets showed they were designed to cause maximum harm to a person.

Since his arrest and during the trial and appeals‚ the double-amputee has been living with his uncle and aunt‚ Arnold and Lois‚ in their luxury Pretoria home. He had begun studying at the London School of Economics for a B.Sc business with law degree‚ by correspondence.

He spent his 28th birthday in prison in Pretoria but was out on correctional supervision in time for his 29th. His aunt shared a photo of him celebrating with her grandchildren.

Steenkamp was 29 when he killed her.

Now Pistorius must brace himself to turn 30 in a jail cell.
