Gauteng residents’ perception of their quality of life has increased slightly since 2013‚ although the proportion who believe that elections will be free and fair had dropped precipitously since 2009‚ according to a report released on Tuesday.

Only 48.5% of residents of the province disagreed politics was a waste of time in 2015‚ compared with 69.6% in 2009‚ according to the Gauteng City-Region Observatory 2015 Quality of Life report.

The bicentennial survey polled 30‚002 city residents on a range of political and social perceptions.

58 indicators are then weighted to create a mean quality of life score – which measured 6.2 out of 10 in 2015‚ up from 6.1 in 2013. The GCRO is a joint collaboration between the Gauteng provincial government and the universities of Johannesburg and Witwatersand.

80% of those polled in 2009 said they agreed elections had been or would be free and fair‚ dropping to 61.6% in 2013 and 52.4% in 2015‚ the report read.
