The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) has until 5pm on Thursday “to submit candidate nominations” if it is to take part in this year’s local government elections.

This is required‚ a statement by the Electoral Commission (IEC) said‚ “to give effect to the court judgment”.

The commission said it had on Wednesday night “met with the leadership of the PAC in an attempt to resolve issues related to the participation of the PAC in the 2016 Municipal Elections”.

“Following the Gauteng North High Court ruling of 20 June 2016‚ the Electoral Commission agreed to allow the PAC until 5pm today to submit candidate nominations to give effect to the court judgment‚” the statement said.

The court had‚ on Monday‚ dismissed with costs former PAC leader Letlapa Mphahlele’s attempt to appeal an April court judgment which acknowledged current PAC president Luthando Mbinda as the party’s official leader.

The IEC had decided not to recognise the PAC because of the leadership dispute‚ but‚ following April’s high court ruling‚ had asked the party to present a court order confirming who the party’s legitimate leader was.

“The candidate nomination process is currently being finalised for certification of candidates and parties scheduled for 27 June 2016‚” the IEC said.
