Army will not be called in to quash Tshwane protests

The South African National Defence Force will not be deployed to restore order in Tshwane‚ says government.

“The situation is assessed every day. Every morning‚ National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure‚ NATJOINTS‚ (officials) come and assess developments in the country. It depends on the outcomes of that assessment which they present to the structures that be. A decision is then taken whether to deploy the SANDF or not.

“The SANDF is the last line of the defence of the republic. You do not start by deploying the SANDF before you have fully exhausted all the capacity you have within the police. For now‚ we have police who are deployed everywhere in the country..‚” said Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

There were rumours that certain units in the defence were on standby as the violence continues to grip the country’s capital.
