Two killed over cigarette, beer

Two men were killed after arguments broke out over a beer and a cigarette in separate incidents last weekend.

A 27-year-old man handed himself over to police after allegedly killing another during an argument over beer last week Saturday.

The incident took place at Ndlovini informal settlement near Leaches Bay in East London.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said police were called to the informal settlement on last week Saturday morning after a body of a man was discovered in the bushes.

The body had stab wounds.

Mqala said police could not establish the identity of the deceased or the suspect during their preliminary investigation in the scene.

However, on Monday, the suspect walked into police station and confessed to the murder. The man said he stabbed the deceased after they had an argument over beer while they were drinking at a shebeen.

He was charged with murder and is expected to appear in the East London Magistrate's Court today.

Another man was killed on the same day during an argument over cigarette in Centane.

Butterworth police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the incident, which claimed the life of a 23-year-old man, started at a traditional ceremony on Saturday. Manatha said both men pulled their knives and stabbed each other.

"The deceased was stabbed on his upper body while the suspect sustained stab wounds on his upper body too.

"The deceased died on the spot."

The identities of the two victims will be released after their families have been informed.
