Netcare: We didn’t employ 'teen cardiologist' arrested by Hawks

The Netcare Pholoso Hospital on Wednesday denied “reports that a teenager has secured a position as cardiologist” at the facility‚ saying that by law it “is not allowed…to employ medical doctors”.

The hospital said “the South African Police Service has not yet been in contact” regarding the case‚ nor had its general manager‚ Sydney Masalla‚ “had sight of the documents found at the teenager’s apartment‚ alleged to be from Netcare Pholoso Hospital”.

Masalla said he had no knowledge of the person who allegedly posed as a cardiologist. “I have never had contact with her or received any application from her for admitting privileges at our hospital‚ and have certainly not introduced her to staff at the hospital.”

This came after the Hawks on Tuesday issued a statement saying a Krugersdorp-born teenager allegedly used a fake American cardiologist certificate to apply for a position as a cardiologist at Pietersburg Hospital‚ for which she was shortlisted.

Hawks spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that prior to her shortlisting for the post at the Pietersburg Hospital‚ she had already been introduced to staff at the Netcare Hospital in Polokwane‚ where she was supposed to take up a post as a cardiologist.

“While she was sitting at the Department of Health offices in Polokwane waiting for her turn to be interviewed for the position‚ the teenager got more than what she bargained for when the Hawks pounced on her‚” he said.

He added that further investigation had unearthed the suspect did not have a Grade 12 certificate.

He said that the suspect would appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of fraud.

“There is absolutely no truth in reports that a teenager has secured a position as cardiologist at Netcare Pholoso Hospital. In fact‚ the private sector is not allowed by regulation‚ to employ medical doctors‚” said Masalla.

He said Netcare had “stringent procedures to which all hospitals in the Netcare Group adhere when doctors apply for admitting privileges”.

These would include the “verification of their qualifications and registration status with all relevant statutory bodies”.
