Cape Town is continent’s top host for major events

Cape Town has been confirmed as Africa’s top host of big events.

According to the latest International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) country and city rankings released in May 2016‚ with 48 international association meetings hosted‚ Cape Town has managed to retain its position ahead of Johannesburg‚ Marrakech and Nairobi.

“Over the past five years‚ the estimated economic impact of the conference bids secured is R1.5bn for the province‚” said Judy Lain‚ spokeswoman for the Western Cape destination‚ marketing and trade promotion agency Wesgro.

Over the past year‚ the team has secured 17 conference bids with an estimated delegate attendance of 28‚ 280 and an estimated economic impact of R374m for the province.

The bureau secured its largest bid to date‚ winning the World Ophthalmology Congress for 2020‚ with an estimated delegate attendance of 15‚000 and estimated economic impact of R224m.

Lain said recent major events that were hosted in Cape Town included the world congress on lung health with 1‚500 delegates‚ the world congress on nephrology with 2‚000 delegates and the international library congress with 3‚000 delegates.
