Eight pedestrians killed in KZN since start of weekend

Eight pedestrians have been killed in separate incidents on KwaZulu Natal’s highways in the past 24 hours‚ emergency services said on Saturday afternoon.

In the most recent incident‚ a 40-year-old man was struck by a car on the N2 near Port Shepstone‚ on the south coast on Saturday morning.

“We found that the man had already died before our arrival at the scene because of the extensive injuries he sustained‚” said Athlenda Mathe‚ Netcare 911 spokesman.

The man was declared dead on the scene.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert McKenzie said paramedics had attended to seven incidents last night in which pedestrians were struck and killed by motorists on the province’s highways.

“Motorists have to be more vigilant. Drive with the expectation of there being pedestrians on the highway.”

He said drunk pedestrians walking on highways was becoming a common problem.

“Pedestrians need to be more visible and cross only when it is safe‚” he added.
