Man killed in love rivalry

A fight over a woman has left a man dead after he was bludgeoned with a panga and hammer, allegedly by a love rival.

The victim's mother Rebecca Mqikela broke down when police informed her that her first-born son Lebogang was brutally killed .

Mqikela, from Tigane township near Klerksdorp, could not stop crying while explaining how she learnt of the gruesome killing.

Lebogang was hacked with a panga and stabbed several times on his body until he died, allegedly by his former co-worker after they fought over a girlfriend.

"I saw his body lying on the floor, there was a lot of blood still coming out of his head," she said.

Mqikela said she knew the killer very well. "He was close with my son, I took him as one of my own. He did this to hurt me because he knew that I lost another son in May two years ago," she said.

The man who allegedly killed Lebogang was linked to the murders of his parents and his child in 2012.

His case was later withdrawn due to lack of evidence, she said.

Lebogang's close friend, Jubere Mokoena, said the alleged killer had been planning this for a while.

"Three weeks ago, he [Lebogang] showed me a text message that was coming from him [the accused], in which he was threatening him."

While Sowetan could not access the SMS, Mokoena said it read: "If you do not want to follow my parents, stop what you are doing."

He said Lebogang tried to open a case of intimidation but the alleged killer kept threatening him.

Lebogang had two daughters aged three (not twins).

"He was the breadwinner and I knew that on the 25th of each month he would buy me groceries," his mother said.

Lebogang was also described as a humble person who was always willing to help others.

According to residents, police who were called to the house after the crime was reported spotted a man walking down the street in bloody clothing .

A police officer, who cannot be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said a cosmetics bag and a blood-stained hammer were found.

Police spokesman Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed that a 41-year-old man was arrested and a murder case opened.

The suspect will appear in court soon.
