Hammanskraal residents vow to stay put after violent protests

Hammanskraal‚ north of Pretoria‚ on Tuesday remained a no-go area following violent protests that left two people dead.

Residents of Sekampaneng clashed with the infamous Red Ants security personnel on Monday over the demolition of shacks.

Two municipal buses and three trucks were set alight during the protests.

Red Ants moved into the area on Monday morning‚ destroying shacks that were illegally build on municipal land.

 Two people were allegedly killed before they were set alight.

Residents‚ who vow that they will not move‚ claim the land was given to them by the municipality.

Fannie Sithole’s shack was destroyed in the process.

“They destroyed everything I owned. They also took my food and ID that I use to look for a job. I’m going to rebuild my shack. I am not going anywhere‚” he said.

 Sithole said he was forced to send his four children and wife away.

 Residents blockaded roads with rubble and burned tyres.

Some residents where rebuilding their shacks while other stripped metals from burnt vehicles.

Police are monitoring the situation.
