The African National Congress (ANC) has distanced itself from 'war' comments made by its youth wing.

ANC Youth League leader Collen Maine called on the ruling party in Parliament to respond with war following the physical fight between Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPs and security officers on Tuesday.

Fists, water bottles and helmets flew in Parliament when members of the protection services were called in to remove disruptive EFF MPs from the National Assembly chambers.

Maine said that it was about time the ANC in Parliament gave the EFF war.

"If they want a fight, they must be given war," Maine told News24.

"Julius and his people must know no one has monopoly on anarchy. Actually we can be more [anarchic] than him," he was quoted saying.

The ANC said that the comments are a direct opposite of the type of society it wants to build.

"Our responsibility and duty as the ANC and all Members of Parliament should be restore the dignity and decorum of Parliament; ensuring that this very important institution is able to discharge its mandate in an environment characterised by political tolerance," read ANC statement.

"The ANC calls upon all its members and supporters to refrain from using language that is inflammatory and that could undermine our nation's efforts of promoting and preserving political tolerance."

A case of damage to property has been opened at the Cape Town police station by Parliament against the EFF MPs.

This comes as a glass entrance door to parliament was shattered‚ furniture damaged and clothes torn during the scuffle between EFF MPs and Parliament protection services.
