Tsitsa finds a home of her own at Cape Town’s new rental estate

Nombulelo Tsitsa (52) is from the Eastern Cape. She works as a cleaner in Cape Town and lives in Philippi.

“This is the first time I am living on my own‚” she said. I am so excited and I can’t wait for month end to arrive so that I can buy my own curtains. My whole life I have been struggling to get a decent accommodation.”

Tsitsa is moving into Belhar Gardens rental estate‚ a R200-million project that will have 629 rental units when it is completed. Of these‚ 192 are allocated to primary beneficiaries earning less than R3 500 a month‚ and 437 units will be for those earning less than R7500 a month.

Speaking at the launch of the project on Friday Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu expressed her appreciation of the co-operation of all spheres of government in making the rental estate a reality.

The rental units are part of the overall R1.3 billion development covering 30‚3 hectares. It will consist of 3 616 units and offer various forms of tenure and will include social housing (subsidised rental)‚ open market rental units‚ student accommodation‚ open market GAP units and a small number of freestanding open market bonded units.

This rental estate uses heat pumps instead of conventional geysers which saves 55% in energy consumption.
