Cope: SA political parties should note Trump and Sanders in the US

The Congress of the People (Cope) on Wednesday compared the progress of an “obnoxious” Donald Trump and “charged-up” Bernie Sanders in the US presidential race to an “air of rebellion in South African politics”.

This came after Republican Trump all but sowed up his party’s nomination following Ted Cruz’s dropping out of the race‚ and Democrat Sanders won an unexpected primary in Indiana on Tuesday night.

Cope’s Dennis Bloem said of American politics: “Political party establishments no longer have monopoly on influencing candidate selection.

“Voters are fed up with the establishment. The prosperity that politicians enjoy is confined to them and to the wealthy. Ordinary people are being let down by establishment politics.

“South African political parties should take note of the trend that is evolving in the USA. People want a politics of sustainable benefit‚ not of empty promises.”

Similarly‚ Bloem said‚ South African voters are “no longer swallowing promises”‚ and took a swipe at the African National Congress for “imposing ineffectual and lazy candidates on communities”.

“There is therefore also an air of rebellion in South African politics. Voters…want action‚ competence‚ accountability‚ transparency‚ affordability and delivery‚” Bloem said.

He called for “the formation of ‘voter blocs’ in each municipal ward” as this will “ensure that voters continue to hold the whip hand after the elections”.

Bloem also “South Africans must demand that the electoral system…is reformed to strengthen our democracy‚ enhance transparency and make a higher level of accountability obligatory”.
