One killed‚ another wounded in shootout with police

Police in Port Elizabeth are investigating whether there is a link between suspects involved in a shootout with police‚ in which one man was killed and another wounded‚ and a robbery at a local takeaway shop on Sunday evening.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said members of the New Brighton Crime Prevention unit had engaged in a shootout with occupants of a bakkie who had opened fire on them. Police had retaliated and the driver of the vehicle had been fatally wounded while another occupant of the bakkie was wounded in the leg.

A third suspect was arrested at a nearby house in Zokufa Street in New Brighton.

Shortly before the shootout‚ three people were involved in a hold-up at a takeaway shop in the area that was owned by a foreign national.

Col Naidu said an unknown man had apparently entered the shop and fired a shot. The suspect had then assaulted the shop owner with the butt of his gun.

“Two other men appeared at the door of the shop. The suspect then loaded cigarettes in a packet‚ took cash and two cellphones before fleeing‚” she added.
