Public protector gets support ahead of Parliament appearance

Fresh from being vindicated by the highest court in the country‚ Thuli Madonsela will on Thursday appear in the institution which that same court‚ in the same ruling‚ found to have failed in its constitutional duties.

The public protector – whose report about spending on President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead ultimately led to last week’s landmark Constitutional Court ruling – is to brief Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on “2016/17 budgets”.

Madonsela’s deputy‚ Kevin Malunga‚ on Wednesday night used his Twitter account — @KevinMalunga – to show a photo he took as the “@PublicProtector team prepares for session in @ParliamentofRSA in CT @ThuliMadonsela3 Good governance all the way” earlier in the day.

His followers greeted this warmly with Neo Pheko ?@NeoPheko5 posting: “@KevinMalunga @PublicProtector @ParliamentofRSA @ThuliMadonsela3 The undisputed formidable team”‚ while Yega Govender ?@yegagovender20 was sure they would not be cowed: “@KevinMalunga @PublicProtector @ParliamentofRSA @ThuliMadonsela3 You need not fear the Hawks or any government instituted intimidators!”

matsilisolerato ?@matsilibloem was relishing the meeting: “@KevinMalunga I can’t wait‚take them on” ‚ while Women In Business ?@WIBMIDLANDS said simply: “@KevinMalunga @PublicProtector @ParliamentofRSA @ThuliMadonsela3 thinking of you all and wishing you the best of luck”.

On Thursday morning‚ Malunga updated an earlier tweet in which he had given a time for the committee encounter: “@Dr–Zolani @PublicProtector @ParliamentofRSA @ThuliMadonsela3 Please note that the time of our presentation has changed to 10h00 today.”

The committee meeting has the potential to be a testy affair as the Constitutional Court last week ruled in favour of applications brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters about the constitutionality of government’s action on the remedial actions set down in Madonsela’s Nkandla report “Secure in Comfort”.

The court found that Zuma and Parliamant had failed to uphold the constitution.

Madonsela’s appearance in Parliament comes two days after the DA’s attempt‚ based on that ruling‚ to have Zuma impeached in the National Assembly failed.

This led to hints of a defiance campaign to be mounted by opposition parties and mass action programmes announced by civil society and watchdog organisations around to the country calling for Zuma to be recalled or step down.

Also in front of the committee on Thursday with be Legal Aid South Africa and the South African Human Rights Commission.
