Suspension of KZN police commissioner not enough - AfriForum

The civil rights group AfriForum has laid a complaint with acting National Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Homotso Phahlane in which it requests that the provincial police commissioner of Kwazulu-Natal Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni be dismissed and prosecuted.

This follows the announcement by Phahlane that Ngobeni had been suspended and that another internal investigation would be launched to establish whether or not she was fit to be provincial police commissioner.

According to Afriforum‚ Ngobeni has allegedly been linked along with other police officers and business people to various cases of corruption and fraud since 2011‚ but has never been prosecuted.

“It is good to see that Lt-Gen Phahlane is acting against Lt-Gen Ngobeni‚ but AfriForum is of the opinion that his actions are not strict enough. Ngobeni has been accused repeatedly of corruption and other crimes in the past five years – among others tender fraud of R60 million – and should be prosecuted criminally‚” said Ian Cameron‚ AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety.
