President Jacob Zuma “has noted and respects the judgment” handed down by the Constitutional Court and its findings relating to the Public Protector Report on Nkandla‚ the President’s homestead.

A statement issued by acting Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams stated: “The President appreciates and reaffirms the powers of the Constitutional Court as a final arbiter on matters of the Constitution in the Republic of South Africa“.

“The President will reflect on the judgment and its implications on the state and government‚ and will in consultation with other impacted institutions of state determine the appropriate action.

“The President and government remain confident that our constitutional democracy remains strong and intact and affirms the Chapter 9 institutions established to strengthen and support the country’s democracy.”

The Constitutional Court on Thursday ordered Zuma to personally pay the costs for the construction of a visitor’s centre‚ amphitheatre‚ cattle kraal‚ chicken run and swimming pool at his Nkandla residence.

The court also condemned the “illegality” of Zuma’s conduct in failing to comply with the remedial action set out by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela in her 2014 report titled “Secure in Comfort”.
