IEC official axed as ANC recruits

Sekhukhune Congress (SC) in Limpopo caught ANC members distributing party forms and issuing membership cards during local government election voter registration over the weekend.

This has led to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) firing their registration supervisor with immediate effect following a complaint by Sekhukhune Congress.

The SC wrote to the head office of the IEC in Gauteng to report the matter and ask for investigation after people were seen distributing ANC material inside the station at Hans Komane Secondary School in GaNchabeleng village in Sekhukhune on Saturday.

SC party leader Derick Mosoana said one of their members was doing observation rounds when he witnessed ANC cards and forms being distributed.

The SC, a small regional political party in Limpopo, produced a picture showing papers with an ANC logo they claimed were membership forms.

Sowetan has viewed the picture showing officials sitting not far from a table which appears to have a stack of ANC-branded cards and documents with the words "African National Congress Tubatse Fetakgomo Sub Region" written on them.

Mosoana said that was the only picture they managed to save after electoral staff forcibly deleted the rest. He said one of their members also reported being invited to fill out a form and join the governing party.

"The IEC must investigate and make sure that their staff are not politically aligned. We want to know why there was an ANC information table inside the station?" Mosoana asked.

In the letter, the party explained that the municipal electoral officer in the area intervened promptly by visiting the station after the complaint was raised with her.

"The incident left us questioning the independence of the electoral staff and the institution (IEC) ..." the letter states.

IEC national spokeswoman Kate Bapela confirmed the incident and said they had taken a decision to dismiss their official. She said they have also recommended that the said employee not be employed by IEC offices in other provinces.

ANC provincial spokesman Aluwani Netsianda said they would respond after conducting their own investigation.
