Violent protests in Kwadukuza

Violent protests broke out in Shakashead in KwaDukuza‚ where protestors burnt a councillor’s house and vehicles on Monday.

Protesters barricaded the N2 main road and the alternative R102‚ burning tyres and preventing the flow of traffic and emergency vehicles.

The protests are thought to be election-related‚ with conflicts between different parties and factions.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison‚ Willies Mchunu placed police on high alert‚ calling on them to avert illegal protests.

The local councillor was escorted to safety by the police after his car and house were destroyed by protesters.

Protesters were reportedly throwing stones at vehicles on Tuesday.

Mchunu called on members of the community to refrain from violence.

“Anyone who is burning the property not belonging to them is committing crime‚” Mchunu said.

“The barricading of main road N2‚ has a devastating impact on the economy of the province. This road is used as a link with neighbouring provinces and countries‚ and provides a strategic link to towns in the province. The emergency services are also negatively affected‚” said Mchunu.
