Four die in lightning strikes in KwaZulu-Natal

A 28-year-old woman died after being struck by lightning in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday‚ bringing to four the death toll from this weather phenomenon in the province in recent days.

Three people from the Shembe church were killed and 40 injured by lightning while worshipping under a tree in Harding‚ according to a statement by the co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube on Saturday.

Robert McKenzie‚ spokesman for KZN emergency services‚ said in a statement on Monday that officials were called out to two lightning emergencies in the Ilembe district on Sunday.

“Last night at around 19h30 paramedics from the Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services responded to a house in the Ndwedwe area‚ near the Mzokholayo School. At this scene‚ sadly a 28 year old woman had sustained fatal injuries after lightning reported stuck the house she was in. Another person in the house was seriously injured and treated by KZN EMS paramedics.

“In a separate incident near the Wosiyane court‚ also in the Ndwedwe area‚ three people were seriously injured after their house was stuck by lightning. These patients had all sustained serious injuries‚ but were taken to hospital in a stable condition.”
