Sea rescuers have recovered the body of a 40-year-old angler from Durban who was swept out to sea by rip currents on Saturday morning while fishing at Hole in the Wall on the Transkeian coastline in the Eastern Cape‚ the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Geoff McGregor‚ NSRI East London station commander‚ said fellow anglers had attempted to rescue the man — who was engulfed by waves while landing a catch in shallow surf – by throwing rope towards him. But he was swept out to sea.

“An EC Government Health EMS rescue helicopter‚ the SA Police Services and a Police K-9 Search and Rescue team were activated.

“On arrival on the scene a search commenced for the angler missing in the surf and during the search operation the body of the man was located and recovered from the water and brought to shore where paramedics declared him deceased.

“His body has been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket‚” McGregor said.
