Uncle gets 48-year jail sentence for child rape

A 22-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man has been sentenced to 48 years imprisonment for raping his young nieces — who were between eight and 12 years old.

The man‚ from the Manyameni area at Mthunzini‚ had raped the three victims over different times since 2009. He had lived in the same homestead as his victims. He was convicted and sentenced by the Esikhawini Regional Court.

Police explained how they had made the arrest: “The accused started raping the first victim in 2009 and always threatened her not to report the matter to anyone. The victim did not report the matter as she was scared that she might be killed by her uncle. The accused continued with his tricks and raped two more victims in the same homestead on different times. The victims broke their silence and reported these incidents to the police in February 2012 and Empangeni Family Violence‚ Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over investigation that led to the subsequent arrest of the accused. He was traced and arrested at Thongathi area where he was hiding after he heard that the police were looking for him.”

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni‚ commenting on the successful conviction‚ said: “He was supposed to protect his niece from criminals but he chose to rape them“.
