Mom in court after 2-year-old spends night sleeping outside

A Kagiso mother appeared in court for negligence on Tuesday after her two-year-old daughter was found sleeping outside her locked home at the weekend, said West Rand police.

The mother had reportedly left her child playing at a neighbour's house with other children at about 20:15 on Saturday night, said Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.

She never came back for her child.

"When the neighbour woke up in the early hours of the next morning at about 02:00, she found the two-year-old baby sleeping next to the door," said Sibiya.

"[She] noticed that it was dark and the baby’s mother had not returned home... as the door was still locked."

The woman went to her neighbour's yard, fetched the child and brought her to her own home and then alerted police to the matter.

When the mother returned home later the next day, she was arrested.

"The suspect appeared briefly in the Kagiso Magistrate's Court today and was released on a warning for [her] next court appearance," said Sibiya.

It was not immediately clear when she would return to court or whether the child was still in her care pending the outcome of the case.
