Over 360 arrested for sex crimes in just one month in KZN

More than 360 people were arrested for sexual related crimes in just one month in KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Wednesday.

The 363 arrests were made by various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences units in the province during December and resulted in 25 convictions, police said.

Spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said in a statement that the suspects were arrested for crimes including rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, attempted rape and abduction.

The arrests were made between December 1 and December 31 2015.

He said the various accused appeared in courts throughout the province.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said she was confident in the justice system in terms of sentences that would be meted out to those convicted of the crimes.

"The sentences handed down will send a clear message to would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and make sure that they present a thorough investigated docket to court for prosecution," she said. "KwaZulu-Natal police will attempt ... to prevent crimes against women and children and make the province a safer place for everyone."
