‘Illegal strike’ halts Gautrain bus services

Thousands of Gautrain commuters faced delays on Tuesday morning as bus services were suspended due to an “illegal strike”.

The transport service used its Twitter account — @TheGautrain — to announce: “Our bus service won’t be operating as of this morning. Drivers haven’t reported for duty. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

It followed this with: “Our train service continues to operate to schedule.”

Mention of the drivers’ absence being due to an “illegal strike” was made in service announcements at various stations on Tuesday morning‚ and passengers were advised to make “alternate transport arrangements”.

TMG Digital observed commuters returning to the car park at Rhodesfield‚ and opting to drive to their places of work rather than use the Gautrain.

Gautrain’s bus services were disrupted a number of times last year due to illegal industrial action‚ the most recent being a sit-in over a meal interval in October.
