More than a thousand people wanted for crimes ranging from rape and murder to aggravated robberies were arrested during the Western Cape’s holiday season drive‚ police said New Year’s Eve.
Of the 1171 suspects‚ 45 had previously appeared before court and had absconded. The rest were newly reported cases. These arrests are part of the detective tracing operations which started on 16 December.
Other safety initiatives in the province have hauled in just over a thousand suspects‚ illegal firearms‚ an assortment of drugs such as dagga‚ cocaine‚ heroin‚ tik‚ khat and mandrax‚ and 2748 litres of alcohol.
